Overview
Our Master’s in Mathematics Degree program provides rigorous training in analytical problem-solving to enhance and enrich your skills and knowledge in mathematics for an exciting, successful career in industry, research or education. Mastering the mathematical tools that power the modern world opens the door to some of the most desirable, secure, and satisfying careers available, according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Jobs of 2021.
In all our mathematics master’s degree specializations, we provide exceptional value with opportunities in and out of the classroom to gain the training and experience you need to advance your career with mathematics.
Program Benefits
In recent years, the best non-medical jobs have been mathematician, statistician and software developer, according to U.S. News & World Report. Mathematics is a fast-changing field at the intersection of all three. Mathematicians know how to find patterns in data that solve problems in business, medicine, science, finance, security, government and many other fields. We will teach you to understand how the mathematics works, so you can create, think deeply and thrive in ever-changing career paths. With a master’s in mathematics from Tarleton, you will graduate the mathematical foundation to master and lead tomorrow.
Building on one of the strongest undergraduate mathematics education programs in Texas, we offer graduate mathematics courses specifically designed with teachers in mind. These courses provide the content knowledge and experiences necessary for teachers to move into leadership positions within their school districts such as curriculum specialist, mathematics coach or department chair. In addition, this program provides the necessary graduate mathematics courses needed to be credentialed to teach dual credit courses in their high schools. Schools continually need great mathematics teachers and are willing to pay above base salary to get them. Tarleton teachers are highly sought after by schools in the region because of our intensive, high-quality program.
Math powers the modern world. The knowledge, skills and techniques you learn from courses, research, teaching, field experiences and other opportunities have far-reaching applications and prepare you for a variety of careers in mathematics and beyond.
Courses
All graduate students in the mathematics master’s degree program take core coursework in statistical models, abstract algebra, linear algebra and real analysis. Then, you’ll choose electives in your area of specialization, such as In-Depth Mathematical Reasoning, Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometry and Technology-Aided Mathematics for mathematics education; Statistical Models, Data Science and Data Warehousing for data science; or Complex Variables and Topology for pure and applied mathematics.
More About the Program
- Get paid to teach or research while getting your degree
Graduate research assistantships (GRAs) pay you to work on original research with major partners like the U.S. Dept of Agriculture and Blue Cross Blue Shield that is fundamentally different from textbook or classroom learning. Graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs) offer in-the-classroom experience teaching university-level math courses to improve your teaching strategies and skills while you complete your own graduate coursework.
- Gain experience through research and real-world problem-solving
Most graduate students conduct research with faculty in mathematics and other departments, solving real, multidisciplinary problems while gaining valuable experience employers seek.
- Master Technology
Tarleton’s Department of Mathematics houses a high-performance GPU parallel-computing lab, which provides opportunities for hands-on experience in applied mathematics and data science using state-of-the-art tools and technology. Our data science courses are constantly evolving to incorporate the newest tools and algorithms.
- Present Research
Our graduate students in mathematics present their research at national and international conferences such as:
- Mathematical Association of America (MAA) TX section
- GPU Technology Conference
- Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching
- National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
- International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics
- Major Partnerships
Mathematics graduate students solve real problems for major partners, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tufts/MIT Metric Geometry and Gerrymandering Group, Center for Agribusiness Excellence, Tarleton Analytics Institute, Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research and more.
- Student Activities
Participate in Math Club and annual Math Enrichment Day, Service Day and STEM learning activities with local schools, Tarleton Educators for the Advancement of Mathematics (TEAM), Tarleton Calculus Bowl, Differential Equations Challenge Competition and more.
