Overview

The Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) with a Rural Health Emphasis is a fully online graduate program designed to prepare the next generation of public health professionals to improve population health through disease prevention, evidence-based practice, research, leadership, policy, innovation, and data-informed decision-making. The interdisciplinary program provides advanced preparation across the core areas of public health while integrating specialized study in rural health, health systems, health technology, research, leadership, and population health improvement.
Designed for working professionals and recent graduates, the MSPH is delivered online in an asynchronous format and prepares graduates to assess population health needs, translate evidence into action, and develop sustainable solutions to complex public health challenges, particularly those affecting rural and limited-access communities. Students may choose a 42-credit Capstone Track or a 45-credit Thesis Track based on their professional and academic goals. Qualified Tarleton undergraduates may also begin selected graduate coursework through the University's Accelerated Graduate Pathway, subject to Graduate Studies requirements and program approval.

Explore the MSPH Curriculum: The MSPH curriculum combines advanced study in the core areas of public health with applied learning in epidemiology, biostatistics, research, health policy and systems, leadership, health communication, program planning and evaluation, and population health. The program's distinctive Rural Health Emphasis includes specialized coursework in Fundamentals of Rural Public Health, Telehealth and Health Information Technology, and Non-Medical Drivers of Health in Rural Populations. Students may further tailor their studies through electives in areas such as health promotion, health literacy, public health informatics, emergency preparedness, mental health and substance use, project management, and systems thinking.

Tarleton's MSPH provides a flexible, applied graduate experience that connects students with contemporary public health challenges, with particular attention to the needs and opportunities of rural communities. Students engage with faculty, public health professionals, and community perspectives while exploring practical approaches to improving population health and strengthening community resilience. Students have opportunities to participate in applied research, data analysis, community and population health assessment, program evaluation, and scholarly inquiry. Through faculty mentorship, community-engaged projects, and partnerships with healthcare, public health, and community organizations, students can connect graduate learning with real-world public health practice. The online learning environment brings together working professionals and recent graduates with diverse academic, professional, and community experiences, creating opportunities for collaboration and peer learning. Students can further shape their graduate experience through applied projects, research, and a culminating capstone or thesis experience aligned with their professional or academic goals.

Certification and Licensure Preparation

The MSPH’s interdisciplinary curriculum provides knowledge and skills that may support graduates pursuing professional certifications relevant to their career interests and experience, including:

  • Certified in Public Health (CPH): A national credential for public health professionals demonstrating competency across foundational areas of public health. The MSPH curriculum provides preparation across many of the public health domains assessed by the certification examination.
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®): A national credential for professionals working in health education, health promotion, disease prevention, and community health. MSPH coursework in health promotion, communication, program planning, implementation, and evaluation may support preparation in relevant competency areas.
  • Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES®): An advanced credential for experienced health education and health promotion professionals. Relevant MSPH coursework may contribute to professional development in advanced health education competencies; candidates must independently meet the experience and eligibility requirements established by the credentialing organization.
  • Registered Sanitarian (R.S.) / Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS/RS): Professional credentials associated with environmental health practice, including areas such as food safety, water quality, sanitation, environmental protection, and regulatory inspection. Eligibility and credentialing requirements vary by state and certifying organization and may require specific science coursework and professional experience in addition to the MSPH.
  • Project Management Certifications (CAPM®/PMP®): MSPH coursework in project management, leadership, program planning and evaluation, and organizational decision-making develops competencies relevant to professional project management. Graduates may pursue credentials offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI), including the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) and, with the required professional project leadership experience and training, the Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification. Admissions Requirements

Admission to the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) is based on the applicant's academic preparation and potential for success in graduate-level public health education. Applicants must meet MSPH program requirements as well as applicable admission requirements established by the Tarleton State University College of Graduate Studies. Unconditional Admission Applicants may be considered for unconditional admission if they:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree in public health or a related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Meet applicable College of Graduate Studies admission requirements. Related academic backgrounds may include, but are not limited to, health sciences, healthcare administration, nursing and allied health, biology, epidemiology, environmental health, psychology, sociology, kinesiology, and other health, behavioral, social science, or related disciplines.

Conditional Admission Applicants who do not meet the requirements for unconditional admission but demonstrate the potential for graduate-level success may be considered for conditional admission through holistic review. Applicants must:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree in public health or a related discipline.
  • Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Receive a favorable recommendation following program review of relevant factors such as academic preparation, professional or public health experience, personal statement, references, and other evidence of potential for graduate-level success.

  Students admitted conditionally must achieve a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA during their first semester of graduate coursework to remain in good academic standing and continue in the MSPH program. All applicants must satisfy applicable admission and documentation requirements established by the Tarleton State University College of Graduate Studies.
